How Much Carbohydrate?

Answered By WLR Dietitian
Juliette Kellow BSc RD

Q I’ve lost 4 stone and have another 8 stone to go. I’m new to WLR and think it’s fantastic, but it’s made me realise I might be having too many carbohydrates. Normally my fat intake provides about 20 percent of my calories and my carbs around 60-65 percent. Is this OK?

A If you’re sticking to your calorie allowance and losing weight at your chosen rate, then it’s absolutely fine. However, I suggest you do a mental check to ensure that most of the carbs in your diet are coming from starchy, high-fibre foods rather than sugary, refined foods.

This means making sure you’re not eating too many biscuits, cakes, sweets, chocolate, sugary drinks, preserves and sweet pastries – foods that generally contain sugar but few nutrients. Instead, make sure your carbs are coming from foods like wholegrain cereals and breads, wholewheat pasta, brown rice, fruit, veg and pulses. All of these foods are low in fat and packed with a range of nutrients needed for good health.
