Soup

As winter approaches with its darker nights and cold weather, we turn our thoughts to eating something warm and hearty. Soup is a natural choice but you need to be careful — thick and creamy options can be loaded with calories. There are however a lot of low calorie / reduced fat choices around. We put them to the test.

Healthy Eating, Baxters*

Spicy Tomato & Rice Soup with Sweetcorn, Healthy Choice, Baxters*

A pleasant looking soup with a strong tomato aroma. The watery base boasts lots of rice and crunchy bits of sweetcorn, which fill you up. Nice spicy flavour - to warm you through. A lovely winter soup.

Campbell's*

Chicken Soup, Campbell's*

Smooth, creamy and very tasty. Not bad chicken content and hard to believe this is low fat, being so much thicker and creamier than any of the others. Definitely satisfying!

Slim-a-Soup, Batchelor's*

Cajun Spicy Vegetable, Slim-a-Soup, Batchelor's*

Nice and spicy flavour with quite a few vegetables, but fairly watery and not very filling. More like a drink than a soup. Nice and warming – good with a hearty chunk of wholemeal bread.

Reduced Calorie Quick Soup, Waitrose*

Golden Vegetable, Reduced Calorie Quick Soup, Waitrose*

Quite creamy in texture considering it was a cup-a-soup. Nice flavour, lots of vegetables. Like the other cup-a-soup it wasn't very filling.

Be Good to Yourself, Sainsbury's*

Potato, Leek & Chicken Soup, Be Good to Yourself, Sainsbury's*

Chunky bits of potato and leek in a watery vegetable base. Not particularly filling. There was no real need for the chicken, as it was chewy and tasteless, and lacking in quantity — would've made quite a nice potato and leek soup!

Weight Watchers, Heinz*

Tomato Soup, Weight Watchers from Heinz*

The size of the can is disappointing — will it fill you up? A good colour but disappointing taste — dry and powdery.

Conclusion

Yes, soup can be a good choice of food to eat, accompanied by wholemeal bread. We found some of the brands tasty and filling — just what you want on a cold winter's day.
